Some Sound Decent Advice

Posted by TheJOTUS on August 17, 2010

Because let’s face it, you gotta start somewhere.

Gary North comes at it with some specific advice you won’t hear from the decepticons in the “big R” republican party.  Ten facts of American politics:

1. You can’t beat something with nothing.
2. 80% of politicians respond only to two things: (1) fear; (2) pain.
3. Bureaucrats (tenured) respond only to one thing: budget cuts.
4. Political reform never comes as long as the tax money flows in.
5. The #1 goal is to reduce the government’s funds, not re-direct them.
6. Congress’s club system sucks in 80% of new members by term #2.
7. Politicians listen to their peers, not to their constituents.
8. Money from the government buys off most voters.
9. Most citizens care little about politics and know less.
10. This gives influence to organized swing-vote blocs.

And eight rules of engagement:

1. Vote for a hard-core challenger on the other side against a squishy incumbent
2. Hold your newly elected politician’s feet to the fire the first time he breaks ranks on a key vote
3. Get him to sign a resignation letter
4. Track all of his votes on your #1 issue, and post them online
5. Find out who his largest campaign donors are
6. Instill fear
7. Inflict pain
8. Trust, but verify

Go ahead and click over.  It is a good read and worth the time.

I Think Jimmy Buffet Has Been Out In The Sun A Tad Too Long

Posted by TheJOTUS on July 17, 2010

So I recorded Jimmy Buffet’s charity concert to help the people of the Gulf he had last week.  I have always been a parrothead.  Then I find out Jimmy Buffet, the genius that he is, seems to know who to blame for the oil spill.  After reading this, I haven’t brought myself to watch it yet:

The Obama-supporting musician told the Associated Press on Tuesday that he believed the Bush administration was responsible for the crisis, due to its alleged ties to oil companies.

“To me it was more about eight years of bad policy before [Obama] got there that let this happen,” said Buffett. “It was Dracula running the blood bank in terms of oil and leases.”

While celebrities from Larry King to James Cameron have already lined up to offer aid to people impacted by the oil spill, Buffett says he also hopes that his sea-side concert next Sunday in Gulf Shores, Alabama will soothe people’s anger over the crisis.

“People were going, ‘What are you going to do about things?’ I mean, hell, I can’t stick my finger in that hole. Everybody wishes they could,” Buffett told the Associated Press on Tuesday. “What I’m best at is two hours of escapism for people that have to go back and either live jobs that they don’t like or whatever…it’s that Mardi Gras mentality.”

Jimmy Buffet, splitting atoms with.  His.  Mind!!

Perhaps we should remind Captain Sun Bake that in the last 20 years, it was Obama receiving by far and away the majority of campaign cash from BP.  Something apparently lost on our famous beach bum.  Seriously Jimmy, can you just shut the hell up with the incoherent ramblings of the “Bush did it” syndrome?  Jesus f-ing Christ already.

Look, I openly admit to enjoying his music and have seen him in concert four times.  Really, once you get past the obnoxious overplayed ones he’s most known for, he has written some pretty good tunes.  And the Margaritaville restaurants are good fun, despite the food tasting like ball sweat.   I imagine he’s being asked his take on the Gulf because he grew up in Mobile and started his career in New Orleans.  His career took off after he spent some time in Key West.   And–not coincidentally–he just opened a gigantic name-branded resort in Pensacola.  So, obviously he’s got some over sun-exposed skin in the game.

His music has always had a left leaning tilt to it and when he was interviewed on CNN, he was careful not to seem too partisan one way or another.  Why?  Well because he’s a businessman, and the central part of his fanbase is middle class redstaters who like to blender it up one night a year in an amphitheater parking lot.  I mean really, is there anyone who represents the American dream more than Buffett?  Mediocre so-so talent, incredible marketer, tours in the summer to replenish his bank account……seriously, more power to him.

The guy is worth million and millions of dollars a year.  A year!  And he didn’t get there on the pure residuals of “Cheesburger in Paradise.”  The man owns something like four airplanes and the cash making those bad boys run isn’t cheap.  It’s the concert tickets, the branded margarita maker, the Buffett beer, the tee shirts, the lawn chairs, the baseball caps, and the Lost Shaker of Salt ($7.99, Margaritaville Cafe.)…basically the fleecing of the midwestern boob.

He’s made his millions, and bless him for it.  He keeps a lot of people employed and I for one enjoy his music.  Politically, well Jimmy, just STFU about politics.  Let’s not veer off the path allowing you to attain your incredibly comfortable livilyhood.

The Difference In A Nutshell

Posted by TheJOTUS on July 16, 2010

I got this via email today and I thought it was interesting.  It basically sums up the difference between the Republican and democrat side of the aisle:

If a Republican doesn’t like guns, he doesn’t buy one.
If a Democrat doesn’t like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a Republican is a vegetarian, he doesn’t eat meat.
If a Democrat is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a Republican is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.
If a Democrat is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.

If a Republican is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
A Democrat wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a Republican doesn’t like a talk show host, he switches channels.
Democrats demand that those they don’t like be shut down.

If a Republican is a non-believer, he doesn’t go to church.
A Democrat non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.

If a Republican decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.
A Democrat demands that the rest of us pay for his.

I’ll add one more, and frankly, the most important:  A conservative wants to teach a man to fish.  A democrat wants to just give the man the fish.

And that is basically what it comes down to between the two ideologies.

Hoping Of An Obama Failure

Posted by TheJOTUS on July 3, 2010

I great piece on how failure is always an option (yeah, I know it’s old):

I was going to write about the curious fact that it’s not only mathematically possible but now even somewhat plausible that Republicans could take over the Senate in November; but everybody and his monkey’s paw is already going on about that. So I’m shifting gears: Instead, I’ll argue against Michael Medved and every other conservative who repeats the stupid mantra that “Of course we hope President Obama is successful!”

That way, my only competition is Rush Limbaugh, whose explanation is kind of shallow, to tell the truth.

When some caller presses Medved on what the heck he means, he has a pat, memorized answer. Alas, it’s a complete non-sequitur. Medved invariably explains that he doesn’t mean he hopes Barack H. Obama succeeds in passing card check, implementing energy cripple and tax, closing Gitmo, ending the war against the Iran/al-Qaeda Axis, nationalizing more banks and other corporations, raising taxes, spending us into oblivion, and for dessert, foisting ObamaCare on the charred remains. Rather, Medved insists that by “I hope the president is successful,” he means he hopes that Obama succeeds in leading America to prosperity, security, and liberty.

This explanation is nothing but Mueslix on stilts: nutty, flakey, and wobbly all at the same time.

Medved is engaging in what I call “Argument by Tendentious Redefinition.” With that rhetorical trick, proponent takes an ordinary, simple English-language word (such as “success”) and secretly redefines it to a meaning whose only purpose is to win the argument — while still relying upon people imagining that he still means the generally accepted definition. In this case, the word “success” (meaning, achieving a goal one has set) is transmogrified to mean, achieving the goal diametrically opposite what one has enunciated, but which happens to be more congenial to the “well-wisher.”

When Michael Medved or any of a score of conservative pundits says he hopes Obama succeeds, it’s really code for saying he hopes Obama converts to conservatism. While that may be a laudible wish, it’s definitely not covered by the word “success.”

……But I have never in my entire life been a liberal; I was never trained to think of a black man or some other minority as a representative of some group, or that his failure was due to the white man “holding him down for 300 years,” as many blacktivists insist. Consequently, I feel no guilt whatsoever wishing abject failure upon Barack H. Obama: Success as Obama defines it is anathema to me, so why on Earth would I wish for it?

In fact, one of our most important rights is the right to fail: By failing, we learn, we grow, we mature… or at least we can. And I would never be so cruel as to take away anybody’s right to fail by, e.g., supporting a government Bureau of Bad Breaks, which tries to make good (at taxpayer expense) any setback or adverse result of poor judgment — like not buying health insurance and then getting sick or injured. That’s a liberal idea, and I despise it as unAmerican and infantalizing.

I particularly like his comment on how he has never been a liberal.  I too, have felt this way.  Even as a kid I always had, what I now know as, conservative beliefs.  I knew that if I wanted something I had to work for it.  It wasn’t just given to me.  I knew that whatever punishment I received it was because of the actions or decisions I made.  It wasn’t George W. Bush or the “man” bring me down.

Anyway, check it out, it’s a good read.

Two Politicians With One Common Message: Telling It Like It Is

Posted by TheJOTUS on May 18, 2010

Perhaps the greastest political ad evvaaaaaahhh.  At first I thought it was one of those Funny or Die type gags.  It’s not.  Money line:  “Who would support such a dummy?”  Classic.

This guy should set his sights a bit higher than Alabama Agriculture Commission:

Just plain freakin’ awesome.   A politician with balls.  And he calls everybody out right out of the gate.  This guy is definitely not focus grouped, blow dried, and pampered.  His request to give him the position is less of a request and more of a demand.  I love it.

And then you have New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.  Basically calling a reporter a whiney little pansy.  This guy is not messing around.  And what’s amazing is that he told everyone from day one that he wasn’t messing around.  So in this clip he basically says it again “I’m not messing around.  I’m here to lead as the state’s governor.”

Pure red meat folks:

Cinco de Mayo? Or Cinco de Mayhem?

Posted by TheJOTUS on May 8, 2010

Apparently on Cinco de Mayo some students were sent home because they offended some mexican-American students by wearing the American Flag depicted on their shirts and shorts.  You have got to be kidding me:

On any other day at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, Daniel Galli and his four friends would not even be noticed for wearing T-shirts with the American flag. But Cinco de Mayo is not any typical day especially on a campus with a large Mexican American student population.

Galli says he and his friends were sitting at a table during brunch break when the vice principal asked two of the boys to remove American flag bandannas that they wearing on their heads and for the others to turn their American flag T-shirts inside out. When they refused, the boys were ordered to go to the principal’s office.

“They said we could wear it on any other day,” Daniel Galli said, “but today is sensitive to Mexican-Americans because it’s supposed to be their holiday so we were not allowed to wear it today.”

The boys said the administrators called their T-shirts “incendiary” that would lead to fights on campus.

…”I think they should apologize cause it is a Mexican Heritage Day,” Annicia Nunez, a Live Oak High student, said. “We don’t deserve to be get disrespected like that. We wouldn’t do that on Fourth of July.”

Ok, I think we can all agree Annicia is hawt.  But with that aside, really Annicia?  Really?  Apologize?  This isn’t mexico.  This is America, where the American flag is 24/7/365.  And the price in blood paid for that flag is a hell of a lot higher than your petty feelings of being “disrespected”.  So how about this apology?  Fuck.  Off.

To compare the Corona beer party to the 4th of July is absurd.  The 4th of July is our day of independence you jackasses.  The American flag stands above all other flags.  The Israeli flag, the Italian flag the Irish flag and yes, the mexican flag!  Not to mention Cinco de Mayo isn’t even a real holiday——in mexico!  Or that they won the battle, but lost the war and were occupied by France, France!!, until the U. S. pressured them back to their own hemisphere.  So instead of bitching about a few kids wearing their own flag, how about you pay attention in class and put yourself some f-ing knowledge.

And what’s worse than the comments from these mexican kids is the Principal and Vice Principal.  The American flag is provocative and incendiary?  In a public school, funded by the American tax payer?  That flag that is soooo incendiary gives you the freedom to open your pie hole and speak such garbage.  Dick bags.  These two clowns should be fired if not for their comments, but at the very least for being stupid idiots.  But they won’t because up and down that school district is one ignorant liberal after another.

So now our flag is controversial.  While other people are celebrating their (supposed) holiday, we can’t have people walking around with the American flag on their person.  Nooooo, can’t have that can we?  Yet if I walked in with a murderous douchbag che guevara t-shirt, why that would be considered edgy.  And notice how tolerance only goes one way.  One way.  White christian males?  Piss on them.  The American flag?  Piss on it.  But upset the beer cart on Cinco de Mayo and it’s outrageous outrage.

Folks, this is a clear example of the deterioration of what our society is.  In particular the culture.  And especially our history.  People who come to this country must accept and respect the American way.  They don’t have to forget where they came from and their past cultures, they can celebrate them.  And should embrace them.  We have Columbus day, St. Patrick’s day, etc., etc.  We get that and it is completely fine.  Be proud of your heritage.  Pass it on to your kids and grandkids.  But you are first and foremost an American.  This is an American society.  Not a mexican and everything else society.

What this Principal and Vice Principal should have done is addressed these kids and the community and said look, you can represent your culture.  But these kids can represent theirs as well.  People in this country embrace ethnic pride.  As they should.  It is the rejection of America where we draw the line.

Top 10 List Of Conservative Movies

Posted by TheJOTUS on February 6, 2010

Way late, but better late than never so they say.  And this is in just the last decade.

Not real sure where The Dark Night fits in…but there is one line I do love:  “I just did what I do best. I took your little plan and I turned it on itself. Look what I did to this city with a few drums of gas and a couple of bullets. Hmmm? You know… You know what I’ve noticed? Nobody panics when things go “according to plan.” Even if the plan is horrifying! If, tomorrow, I tell the press that, like, a gang banger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up, nobody panics, because it’s all “part of the plan.” But when I say that one little old mayor will die, well then everyone loses their minds!”

I’m not sure it makes sense, but I like it.

At any rate, here you go:

1. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (Peter Weir, 2003)

Peter Weir’s unashamedly old-fashioned and visually stunning adaptation of Patrick O’Brian’s novel is one of the greatest odes to leadership ever committed to celluloid. Australian director Weir has made many terrific films, including Gallipoli, Dead Poets Society, The Year of Living Dangerously, and Witness, but Master and Commander was the pinnacle of his career so far. Nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture, it should be essential viewing for any commander-in-chief. Russell Crowe delivers a powerhouse performance as Jack Aubrey, Captain of HMS Surprise, a British warship that hunts and ultimately captures a far larger French adversary during the Napoleonic Wars. Set in 1805, it is an epic tale of heroism and love for country in the face of incredible odds, and a glowing tribute to the grit and determination that forged the British Empire.

2. Black Hawk Down (Ridley Scott, 2001)

Sir Ridley Scott’s searing depiction of the ill-fated US raid on Mogadishu in 1993, which left 19 American servicemen dead, was released just months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States and the launch of the War on Terror. Based on the book by Mark Bowden, it won Academy Awards for Best Film Editing and Sound, and Scott was nominated for Best Director. Many critics enthusiastically dubbed Black Hawk Down an anti-war film, and it is in some respects a cautionary tale about the perils of nation-building. But I regard it above all as an extraordinarily powerful and deeply patriotic tribute to the heroism and bravery of the US military, faced with overwhelming odds in a hostile city dominated by brutal Somali warlords. It is essentially a story of incredible sacrifice and camaraderie in the heat of battle, and ranks alongside Zulu, Saving Private Ryan and A Bridge Too Far as one of the greatest war films of all time.

More at the link.  And it isn’t necessarily in order.

One movie that fails to make the list is The Incredibles, which is one of the most conservative films out there.  At least in the past 5 years.  I loved that whole storyline about the superheros getting sued by an ungrateful American public.

Amazingly conservative.  Go out and achieve.  Also, Syndrome’s unforgettable line:

Syndrome (to Mr. Incredible): “I’ll give them the most spectacular heroics anyone’s ever seen. And when I’m old and I’ve had my fun, I’ll sell my inventions so that everyone can be superheroes. Everyone can be super. And when everyone’s super, no one will be.” [evil laughter]

Sound familiar?

A couple of other mentions here are:

17 Again.  Yeah a teen flick, but believe it or not it is pretty good.  Zac Efron actually does a really good job.  A movie in which a Zac Efron keeps telling promiscuous girls they need to respect themselves (or he’ll call their fathers) isn’t really a teen-squeal sort of deal.  It’s a weirdly, strongly conservative movie.  The really conservative scene is when he’s in class with his daughter, being taught about safe sex, to combat the go-have-sex-everyone’s-doing-it message the teacher is pushing, he basically gives a three minute speech about the virtues of abstinence and that the real point of having sex is to have a baby, a tiny thing “you never imagined you could love so much.”

This conservative personally found his jaw dropping a little bit.  Admittedly as a 17 year old punk this thought never once crossed my mind.  But as a soon to be 40 year old with a child, it seems to ring home.

Another movie is Blast from the Past.  Yeah, I know it wasn’t in the last decade.  Sue me.

Classic line:

Troy: I know, I mean I thought a “gentleman” was somebody that owned horses. But it turns out, his short and simple definition of a lady or a gentleman is, someone who always tries to make sure the people around him or her are as comfortable as possible.
Eve: Where do you think he got all that information?
Troy: From the oddest place – his parents. I mean, I don’t think I got that memo from mine.

Imagine that.

In A Time Of Crisis, America Shows Her Compassion

Posted by TheJOTUS on January 14, 2010

As I am sure everybody has heard by now, the tiny island of Haiti was all but crushed by an earthquake measuring 7.0.  A truly horrific and tragic event.  They went from essentially nothing to, well, absolutely nothing.

Some of the first responders were our Special Forces and churches.  What is striking is how quickly we Americans responded.  But this really shouldn’t be surprising.  This is what we do, this is what we are.  We do it from the heart and we do it because we have soul.  We do it because we are Americans and we care about our fellow human beings.

This is why I resent, from the bottom of my soul and the very core of my being, when Barack Obama goes overseas and puts down this country.  I resent it when he goes overseas and uses code words like American Imperialism to put down our people.  I resent how he lectures to us while cheering to others how the Americans have done so many things to other people. It is a level of douchebaggery that no one has really achieved before.

It’s really hard to rally a nation when you have a president that has spent the past twelve months in office bashing the people.

We are a magnificent country with compassionate people and we try to do what’s right.  We aren’t always right, but most of the time we do the right thing.  Our contributions to mankind are infinite.  Not just with money, food or medical care when people are suffering.  But with our inventions, technological advances, products and our entire way of governing. Not only are we extremely generous to other nations, but we are especially generous to our own people.  We go to great lengths with charities, donations and even taxes to ensure poor people are fed and the elderly are tended to.  America is the very definition of compassion.

We conservatives understand this.  It’s not so much that we are different in any fundamental way than other people.  We’re not.  It’s that our society is different and it nurtures the individual human being.  This is the message conservatives need to get out.

There are times when our attention doesn’t need to focus on what Obama, Pelosi, Reid or any other libtard is doing.  There comes a time when you just need to stop, take a step back and take it all in.  A time to ask: Who are we?  What are we?  What do we stand for?  It is times like right now, where we have this horrible tragedy in Haiti, when it can be crystallized.  A time to show what we, the American people, are about.
